The mundane-9-5-till-I-retire-lifestyle is honestly my worst nightmare.
At such a young age, I knew that I wanted something different; to be different.
In year 9, I attended a leadership school.
In year 10, I went on a 5-month student exchange to Sevierville, Tennessee, USA.
In year 11, I hosted an exchange student from Canada.
In year 12, I decided that I wanted to be able to travel the world wherever/whenever I wanted by having the freedom to take my work with me.
Constantly told by those around me that my dream job/lifestyle:
• Was unrealistic.
• Requires that 9-5 grind and hustle.
• And is what I could have when I retire.
No one believed that I could earn an income while being able to travel the world unless I was to become famous.
Despite everyone trying to drag me into societies rat race, I kept searching for my dream job.
As a jobless, broke, high school graduate, I left home to go and work on my uncle’s dairy farm on and off over spring and summer. Working 7 days a week, doing both morning and afternoon milking’s, I quickly learned that I really hated doing the same thing every day.
In November 2019, I came across a girl on Instagram who was 19 years old and was living my dream life! Amazed by her drive, passion for travel and her ability to earn a significant income online, I immediately had to find out more.
Reaching out to her, she encouraged me to watch a webinar that would teach people how to earn an income online through affiliate marketing.
Excited about this opportunity, I told some of my family and friends about it… I immediately got shot down. They would tell me that “it’s all a scam” or that “it could be a nice hobby” or that “it’s too expensive” to get started and that I still needed a “normal” job. I let their negativity get to me and I pretty much flushed all my hopes and dreams down the toilet.
Following the girl on Instagram, for months I sat back and watched her business grow, her mindset shift and her lifestyle change. I envied her. She had everything that I wanted.
When summer ended, I returned home and was back to where I started; jobless and broke. Being stuck in a small town, it is hard to find work. I applied endlessly for many jobs at neighbouring towns for anything and everything.
As the world was slowly going into lockdown for COVID -19 and jobs were becoming scarcer, I decided that enough was enough.
I spoke to my boyfriend about this opportunity that I had stumbled across and told him that after all these months I was still visualising myself as being my own boss. And for the FIRST TIME I had someone supporting me. He encouraged me to block out the negativity and believed in me.
He gave me the push that I needed to question my ‘I can’t do this’ attitude with ‘why can’t I do this?’ I had nothing else to do! So, whether I was to sink or swim, I believed that it was worth a try!
